Baby car seat basics

A baby car seat is required by law in the United States. The seats are designed to protect the baby from injury or death in the case of a collision. There are four main types of baby car seats. If a child grows out of their car seat before they are old enough to sit in the car facing forward, they will need another, larger one. The weight requirement for children in car seats is being raised in some states, but generally it is recommended that a child use a car seat until they are four feet nine inches tall.

In some states in the US, it is the law that children are restrained in the car seat until they are four years old or weigh 40 pounds.
The features of a baby car seat are:
• Five point harness system
• Three harness slots
• Harness release button
• Harness chest clip
• Harness release mechanism
• Pull strap to tighten harness
• Air bag warning label

An infant car seat is designed for children from birth until two years. At that time they may sit facing forward. This seat will only fit in the car facing backwards. When the child outgrows the seat, a seat for toddlers will be needed. Infant car seats may also double as a carrier.

A convertible car seat can be used the whole time a child needs to sit in a car seat. This makes it a good investment because it will not need to be replaced. It can also be installed in the car facing forward when the child becomes two years old. A convertible baby car seat cannot be used as a carrier and is a bit difficult to move from car to car. They are also quite big for small infants.

Convertible car seats also come with a shield. This is for children over two years and cannot be installed rear facing. These seats are less commonly used and are hard to find.

Booster car seats are only for children over two years old and are only installed in a forward facing position. The child needs to weigh at least 30 to 40 pounds for this seat depending on the model. Many states are raising the weight requirement for children who need to ride in a baby car seat, and there are booster car seats that can safely hold a child who weighs up to 80 pounds. Some models have their own harness and buckles and some use the seat belt in the car. It is a good idea for the child to test the seat and buckles before purchasing a specific model to make sure it is comfortable.

Manufacturers of baby car seats will give safety instructions along with the purchase of the seat. There will also be an expiry date given which is usually about six years from the date of manufacture. It is important to follow the instructions every time the child is placed in the seat. If the instructions are not followed correctly and the child is injured, the manufacturer will not be liable.
